Where ideas connect.
00;00;08;18 - 00;00;10;08
Welcome back to transform!
00;00;10;11 - 00;00;15;07
Today I have two guests who are seasoned
experts in the transportation industry,
00;00;15;10 - 00;00;17;08
and we're really going to be focusing
00;00;17;08 - 00;00;20;18
on a couple of challenges
that we're noticing around the world.
00;00;20;21 - 00;00;22;03
We know that communities are facing
00;00;22;03 - 00;00;25;01
limited access to reliable and affordable
public transport.
00;00;25;04 - 00;00;27;20
Rising emissions and safety concerns.
00;00;27;23 - 00;00;31;04
And we know that change
is already underway, given that digital
00;00;31;07 - 00;00;35;06
technology is shaping the way we move,
how we plan and how we connect.
00;00;35;09 - 00;00;39;26
So we're going to explore technology,
collaboration, courageous leadership
00;00;39;29 - 00;00;44;17
and how those things are driving
transformation in the transport sector.
00;00;44;20 - 00;00;45;16
Welcome, Declan.
00;00;45;17 - 00;00;46;12
Welcome, Darren.
00;00;46;13 - 00;00;48;18
Darren,
would you like to do a quick hello?
00;00;48;21 - 00;00;49;25
Hi, I'm Darren Henderson.
00;00;49;25 - 00;00;52;00
I am a technical director with GHD
00;00;52;03 - 00;00;55;22
specializing in freeway operations
and advanced traffic management systems.
00;00;55;25 - 00;00;57;19
Declan,
would you like to do a quick hello?
00;00;57;22 - 00;01;00;08
Hi, I'm Declan Lucas from trans Max.
00;01;00;11 - 00;01;04;01
I'm vice president of business development
based here in Brisbane, Australia.
00;01;04;04 - 00;01;05;22
Welcome. Both. Welcome, both.
00;01;05;25 - 00;01;11;22
So before we get started, I always like
to ask one question just to break the ice.
00;01;11;25 - 00;01;15;09
I'd like both of you
to describe the future of transport,
00;01;15;12 - 00;01;18;13
but only using one word. Darren.
00;01;18;16 - 00;01;19;28
Optimization.
00;01;20;01 - 00;01;22;19
Oh, interesting. Declan, what about you?
00;01;22;22 - 00;01;24;20
I think it's got to be collaboration.
00;01;24;23 - 00;01;29;04
I'm eager to hear both of those things
in our discussion today.
00;01;29;07 - 00;01;32;17
So I know both of you
have recently attended the it's World
00;01;32;20 - 00;01;36;02
Congress, and I actually want to ask more
about how the conference went.
00;01;36;05 - 00;01;39;12
And for those that don't know,
the IATA World Congress is a premier
00;01;39;15 - 00;01;42;15
global event
for intelligent transportation systems.
00;01;42;20 - 00;01;47;02
Thanks, David as well, attending its World
Congress was a really great opportunity
00;01;47;05 - 00;01;51;12
to catch up on the latest developments
in its technology from around the world,
00;01;51;15 - 00;01;54;06
as well as a chance to hear
from senior industry
00;01;54;06 - 00;01;57;04
leaders, you know,
and how they're thinking about addressing
00;01;57;07 - 00;02;01;05
the current and future challenges
for the transportation industry.
00;02;01;08 - 00;02;05;03
I think CEO and president of Its America,
Laura Casey,
00;02;05;06 - 00;02;09;02
summarized that perfectly
in her various panel appearances.
00;02;09;05 - 00;02;13;06
Right across the conference when she spoke
about the need for real partnerships
00;02;13;09 - 00;02;15;19
within the industry
that need to be developed
00;02;15;19 - 00;02;19;20
in order to unlock
meaningful opportunities and innovation.
00;02;19;23 - 00;02;23;12
She also urged all participants
to take more risks
00;02;23;15 - 00;02;27;16
to move with a greater sense of purpose
and more urgency.
00;02;27;19 - 00;02;29;01
And I think a really critical
00;02;29;01 - 00;02;32;27
kind of message in all that
was if taking those risks isn't possible
00;02;33;00 - 00;02;38;16
for a particular agency or a vendor,
really try and find a partner who can.
00;02;38;19 - 00;02;41;04
And I'd add to her comments
that those partnership
00;02;41;04 - 00;02;44;23
opportunities and offerings
they need to provide long term,
00;02;45;00 - 00;02;48;27
enduring and most importantly,
sustainable community benefits
00;02;49;00 - 00;02;53;04
and outcomes for both transport agencies
and the traveling public.
00;02;53;07 - 00;02;55;02
Darren, how about you?
How is the conference for you?
00;02;55;03 - 00;02;56;23
What were your key takeaways?
00;02;56;26 - 00;03;00;03
Similar to Declan,
I mean, a really valuable experience
00;03;00;06 - 00;03;02;21
to see sort of
where the industry is going.
00;03;02;21 - 00;03;05;21
And as we look forward
to sort of meeting future challenges.
00;03;05;25 - 00;03;08;07
And then from a more technical
perspective,
00;03;08;10 - 00;03;12;07
just seeing emerging technologies
in terms of the devices that we use
00;03;12;10 - 00;03;15;12
in our transportation business,
the ability to collect data,
00;03;15;15 - 00;03;17;27
more accurate data
so that we can understand
00;03;17;27 - 00;03;20;25
better what's going on
within our transportation networks,
00;03;20;28 - 00;03;23;21
but then also seeing new
and emerging technologies
00;03;23;21 - 00;03;26;12
and how we handle that data,
how we manage that data,
00;03;26;15 - 00;03;29;08
how we analyze the information
that we're getting to really get a better
00;03;29;08 - 00;03;33;23
understanding, including the integration
of AI, artificial intelligence,
00;03;33;26 - 00;03;37;07
to sort of help support our analysis of
of the transportation data
00;03;37;10 - 00;03;40;10
that we're getting, and being able
to use that data in a meaningful way
00;03;40;13 - 00;03;44;26
to actually control infrastructure
and get improvements, optimize that word.
00;03;44;28 - 00;03;47;24
Again,
the networks that we're working with.
00;03;47;27 - 00;03;50;27
Declan, how do you see the transfer
industry evolving?
00;03;51;01 - 00;03;54;08
Well, it's pretty clear to me
that when I look at the it's industry
00;03;54;11 - 00;03;58;10
as a whole, there's only increasing
complexity, demands and challenges
00;03;58;13 - 00;04;01;16
facing our transport agencies,
no matter the jurisdiction,
00;04;01;19 - 00;04;05;03
whether it's in America,
whether it's Europe or in Australia.
00;04;05;06 - 00;04;08;05
Our transport agencies are being asked
to do even more
00;04;08;12 - 00;04;11;09
in such a highly constrained
budget environment.
00;04;11;12 - 00;04;15;13
And there's no one single solution
or provider that exists in the market
00;04;15;16 - 00;04;19;19
to serve all of the needs of our transport
agency clients.
00;04;19;22 - 00;04;22;24
And I think it's it's absolutely incumbent
upon industry
00;04;22;27 - 00;04;25;26
suppliers and vendors to come together
00;04;25;29 - 00;04;29;20
and partner to provide our clients
with not just technology systems,
00;04;29;23 - 00;04;33;09
but integrated and interoperable
end to end solutions
00;04;33;12 - 00;04;37;05
that actually demonstrate clear
and obvious enduring benefits.
00;04;37;08 - 00;04;38;05
These benefits.
00;04;38;06 - 00;04;40;03
They need to be easy to measure.
00;04;40;06 - 00;04;44;06
We need to help the transport agencies
to more easily justify the investments
00;04;44;09 - 00;04;47;22
that they are making in their transport
infrastructure and networks.
00;04;47;25 - 00;04;51;26
Basically, it's industry suppliers
and vendors really must look to work
00;04;51;29 - 00;04;54;29
with transport agencies
to break down the silos
00;04;55;02 - 00;04;58;23
and collaborate better
as well, as we got to share more data
00;04;58;26 - 00;05;01;20
and we need to share it
in a meaningful way.
00;05;01;23 - 00;05;03;07
We heard the word collaboration.
00;05;03;07 - 00;05;04;04
Darren, what about you?
00;05;04;07 - 00;05;08;05
How do you see the transfer industry
evolving on your own information?
00;05;08;08 - 00;05;09;09
I mean, as Declan
00;05;09;09 - 00;05;12;29
said, the transportation agencies
that we work with and this is universal,
00;05;13;02 - 00;05;16;21
you know, have less and less resources
to respond to more and more needs.
00;05;16;24 - 00;05;20;06
I think, you know, collectively,
as an industry, we understand that we're
00;05;20;08 - 00;05;24;06
not going to be able to build our way
out of the demands that we have.
00;05;24;09 - 00;05;28;26
So we have to focus on other strategies
that can help us to optimize
00;05;28;29 - 00;05;31;21
and get better productivity
out of the infrastructure
00;05;31;24 - 00;05;34;05
that we already have,
that we've already invested in.
00;05;34;08 - 00;05;37;21
And so, you know, very clearly,
the industry is going in the direction
00;05;37;24 - 00;05;42;09
of using its the tools that intelligent
transportation systems
00;05;42;12 - 00;05;46;29
provide us to better understand
how our systems are performing,
00;05;47;02 - 00;05;50;21
and then be able to implement solutions
that can help optimize
00;05;50;24 - 00;05;54;05
how they perform and get better
productivity out of those investments.
00;05;54;08 - 00;05;57;19
And I think that's, you know,
very clearly where the industry is headed.
00;05;57;22 - 00;06;02;07
I think one thing that stuck out to me
was this idea of real time data.
00;06;02;10 - 00;06;04;10
And we know with digital technology,
00;06;04;10 - 00;06;08;01
it's already driving a much needed change
in the transport sector.
00;06;08;04 - 00;06;12;12
But when it comes to safety
and reliability, the stakes are high.
00;06;12;15 - 00;06;16;06
So, Declan,
what role does specifically real time data
00;06;16;09 - 00;06;20;02
play in enhancing safety and reliability
in transport systems?
00;06;20;05 - 00;06;23;19
So real time
data is absolutely foundational
00;06;23;22 - 00;06;28;12
to enhancing both safety and reliability
in intelligent transportation systems.
00;06;28;15 - 00;06;31;27
For example, if we consider
emergency response and incident management
00;06;32;00 - 00;06;36;10
on a freeway, our streams platform
processes real time incident alerts,
00;06;36;16 - 00;06;41;10
vehicle crash data, roadway conditions,
and other situational awareness data,
00;06;41;13 - 00;06;45;08
and these are shared with emergency
management centers and first responders.
00;06;45;11 - 00;06;49;06
And this helps to significantly speed up
incident detection and dispatch.
00;06;49;09 - 00;06;53;03
It also enables dynamic
rewiring of road users to minimize
00;06;53;06 - 00;06;57;01
secondary collisions,
and it improves crash scene safety.
00;06;57;04 - 00;06;59;23
The simple example
being the use of dynamic message
00;06;59;23 - 00;07;03;21
signs and alerts on a freeway,
warning drivers of a crash ahead.
00;07;03;24 - 00;07;07;18
This reduces the chance of pileups
and protects our first responders
00;07;07;24 - 00;07;09;06
and other road workers.
00;07;09;09 - 00;07;13;14
And this couldn't be achieved without
reliable and consistent real time data.
00;07;13;17 - 00;07;18;08
It seems like that is a key to having
equity and accessibility for the future,
00;07;18;11 - 00;07;23;15
where digital technology is really taking
the forefront of transport innovation.
00;07;23;18 - 00;07;27;15
Darren, I have a question for you
related to equity and accessibility.
00;07;27;18 - 00;07;30;21
How can we ensure that
smart mobility solutions are equitable
00;07;30;24 - 00;07;35;08
and accessible to all communities,
especially those historically underserved?
00;07;35;11 - 00;07;37;13
I think one of the beauties of information
00;07;37;13 - 00;07;41;10
technology, and it's in transportation,
is that it's inherently equitable.
00;07;41;13 - 00;07;46;18
All of the users of the network
benefit equally from the infrastructure
00;07;46;21 - 00;07;48;01
that we place in the field.
00;07;48;04 - 00;07;51;28
It doesn't distinguish
or discriminate by different groups.
00;07;52;01 - 00;07;54;00
It measures everyone individually.
00;07;54;00 - 00;07;58;04
And so if we can then use
that information, process that information
00;07;58;07 - 00;08;02;25
with the new capabilities that we have,
then we can ensure that all systems
00;08;02;28 - 00;08;06;21
are working more productively,
more efficiently, are being optimized
00;08;06;24 - 00;08;10;21
so that we can serve all of our customers,
all of our potential users.
00;08;10;24 - 00;08;13;26
We know that integrating new technologies
into legacy infrastructure
00;08;13;29 - 00;08;16;28
is one of the biggest hurdles
in transport transformation.
00;08;17;01 - 00;08;18;26
So let's also talk about that.
00;08;18;29 - 00;08;22;11
Balancing technical innovation
with public acceptance and community
00;08;22;14 - 00;08;26;26
engagement is one of the most critical
and often the most underestimated
00;08;26;29 - 00;08;30;18
aspects of deploying intelligent
transportation solutions.
00;08;30;21 - 00;08;34;00
For me, some of the ways to ensure
that you get that balance right
00;08;34;03 - 00;08;38;27
are by engaging early
and often with the community.
00;08;39;00 - 00;08;40;24
Also, don't talk about technology.
00;08;40;24 - 00;08;45;09
Talk about the outcomes and the benefits
that the community can expect.
00;08;45;12 - 00;08;48;17
What are the real world
daily impacts for the community?
00;08;48;20 - 00;08;52;01
I think you also have to be upfront
and honest and transparent
00;08;52;04 - 00;08;54;25
with the community
about what you were doing
00;08;54;25 - 00;08;59;23
and how you're doing it, particularly
if there are privacy concerns around data
00;08;59;26 - 00;09;03;19
or if there are short term trade offs,
such as increased congestion
00;09;03;22 - 00;09;06;21
that may occur
during the deployment of a solution.
00;09;06;25 - 00;09;09;24
It's also really important
to measure public perception
00;09;09;24 - 00;09;11;21
of what you're introducing as well,
00;09;11;24 - 00;09;14;15
not just measuring the performance
of a technical metric,
00;09;14;18 - 00;09;17;18
but measuring how people feel about
what you've introduced.
00;09;17;21 - 00;09;19;21
It's really so important.
00;09;19;24 - 00;09;22;09
I'd also add that when you're introducing
00;09;22;09 - 00;09;25;19
a new public facing technology,
you have to start small.
00;09;25;22 - 00;09;28;19
Don't go for an overly ambitious
big Bang rollout.
00;09;28;22 - 00;09;31;21
Demonstrate real value
in smaller scale pilots
00;09;31;24 - 00;09;34;19
and then apply the lessons
learned to wider rollouts.
00;09;34;22 - 00;09;35;19
Yeah. That's awesome.
00;09;35;19 - 00;09;37;10
I love that you've really brought forward
00;09;37;10 - 00;09;40;09
that conversation around public trust
and community buy in.
00;09;40;12 - 00;09;41;26
Darren, I have a question for you.
00;09;41;27 - 00;09;45;04
How do you balance technical innovation
with public acceptance
00;09;45;11 - 00;09;48;24
and community engagement when deploying
intelligent transport systems?
00;09;48;27 - 00;09;51;19
Yeah, obviously
getting out in front of the community
00;09;51;19 - 00;09;54;26
and educating them on what you're doing
and why you're doing it.
00;09;54;29 - 00;09;58;23
As Declan said,
having measurable performance metrics
00;09;58;26 - 00;10;02;05
so that that way you can demonstrate
the effectiveness of your systems.
00;10;02;08 - 00;10;05;23
I think all of those things are important,
and we strive to make those
00;10;05;26 - 00;10;07;09
key components of the projects
00;10;07;09 - 00;10;11;01
that we work on about our introducing
these types of new technologies.
00;10;11;04 - 00;10;14;27
I think one of the challenges we face
is that at a basic level,
00;10;15;00 - 00;10;18;19
it has existed for a long time,
and it has been utilized in
00;10;18;22 - 00;10;22;26
transportation systems for a long time,
but again, only at a very basic level.
00;10;22;29 - 00;10;25;14
You know,
it gives us basic levels of information.
00;10;25;17 - 00;10;28;22
In the past decade or so, we're seeing
00;10;28;25 - 00;10;32;05
huge strides forward
in the capabilities of our.
00;10;32;08 - 00;10;34;00
It's like we have
00;10;34;00 - 00;10;37;24
with communications devices,
you know, that we use on a personal basis.
00;10;37;27 - 00;10;42;16
And so it is changing the paradigm
of how we can use it in transportation.
00;10;42;19 - 00;10;45;27
But because of this sort
of foundational experience
00;10;46;00 - 00;10;49;26
with it's just basic
traffic signals or basic vehicle detection
00;10;49;29 - 00;10;53;24
agencies, the public feel like
they have an understanding of what it is
00;10;53;26 - 00;10;54;16
that we're doing.
00;10;54;16 - 00;10;58;11
And so we often are faced
with the challenge of distinguishing
00;10;58;14 - 00;11;01;29
new approaches
from the old legacy approaches
00;11;02;02 - 00;11;05;02
and having them understand
why these things are different,
00;11;05;05 - 00;11;08;03
how they can work better
and be more effective at
00;11;08;03 - 00;11;11;03
resolving some of the transportation
problems that we have.
00;11;11;09 - 00;11;14;29
So it's really changing the paradigm,
changing how we use information
00;11;15;02 - 00;11;15;26
technologies.
00;11;15;27 - 00;11;19;05
It's to improve the transportation system,
00;11;19;08 - 00;11;22;21
you know, significantly differently
from the way we've used them in the past.
00;11;22;24 - 00;11;26;19
Darren, I love that you talked
about this idea of sharing the why,
00;11;26;22 - 00;11;29;22
the purpose behind the projects
and how they're evolving.
00;11;29;25 - 00;11;32;07
Could you share some examples?
00;11;32;10 - 00;11;33;27
Declan and I are both
00;11;33;27 - 00;11;37;06
actually working on a project right now
with the Riverside County Transportation
00;11;37;09 - 00;11;41;03
Commission in Southern California
to implement a smart freeways project,
00;11;41;06 - 00;11;46;04
a pilot or demonstration project
on Interstate 15, in city of Temecula.
00;11;46;07 - 00;11;48;24
We have, collaborated with that client
00;11;48;24 - 00;11;53;09
to provide a range of outreach solutions
to the public
00;11;53;12 - 00;11;56;13
at the various phases
of project development, appropriately
00;11;56;16 - 00;12;01;08
sizing those, outreach efforts to match
sort of where we were in the process
00;12;01;11 - 00;12;04;19
so that we're not overburdening the public
with information early
00;12;04;22 - 00;12;08;05
in the process when they can't really see
or understand what's going on.
00;12;08;08 - 00;12;11;05
But we've used tools
like a virtual meeting room
00;12;11;05 - 00;12;14;11
that was provided on their website,
so that the public could access
00;12;14;14 - 00;12;17;05
that at any time and understand
what was going on.
00;12;17;08 - 00;12;21;25
Various demonstration videos that explain
the technologies that we're using
00;12;21;28 - 00;12;26;22
and how those work, and the benefits
that can be derived from those solutions.
00;12;26;25 - 00;12;29;24
Simulations of the project itself,
so that the public
00;12;29;24 - 00;12;32;24
can see exactly
what the interfaces will look like,
00;12;32;28 - 00;12;37;01
so that when the project is rolled out,
they will be able to understand that.
00;12;37;04 - 00;12;39;03
And now that we're going
through construction
00;12;39;03 - 00;12;42;12
and we're now going into the stages
of system integration,
00;12;42;15 - 00;12;46;03
that process is being ramped up to
then further educate the public on
00;12;46;07 - 00;12;49;06
what to expect once
the systems are actually up and running.
00;12;49;09 - 00;12;53;08
And they can see for themselves
how these systems are working.
00;12;53;11 - 00;12;56;20
It's awesome to hear that
you're using like, visual cues and tools
00;12;56;23 - 00;13;01;03
that they can actually interact
with and see to get that public buy in.
00;13;01;06 - 00;13;06;08
So I'm sure both of you work
with tons of planners and design teams,
00;13;06;11 - 00;13;10;27
but what shifts are needed
to futureproof our transport systems?
00;13;11;00 - 00;13;15;09
But really thinking about it
from a planning and design perspective.
00;13;15;12 - 00;13;18;02
One of the key
challenges we face in the transportation
00;13;18;02 - 00;13;21;22
industry today,
I think our thinking must evolve.
00;13;21;25 - 00;13;26;03
And future proofing transport systems
requires a fundamental shift
00;13;26;06 - 00;13;27;24
in planning and design.
00;13;27;27 - 00;13;32;04
I think that looks something like
ending the approach of trying to bolt on
00;13;32;07 - 00;13;35;28
smart technologies after physical designs
have been completed.
00;13;36;01 - 00;13;40;08
We need to break down the silos
that exist between traditional engineering
00;13;40;11 - 00;13;45;06
design practices
and more modern it's engineering design.
00;13;45;09 - 00;13;47;06
They're actually complementary
to each other.
00;13;47;06 - 00;13;48;13
They're not competitors,
00;13;48;16 - 00;13;52;16
but we must embed digital infrastructure
from the very beginning.
00;13;52;19 - 00;13;55;08
I think we also need to design
our transport infrastructure
00;13;55;08 - 00;14;00;11
for the likelihood of even more extreme
heat, flooding and wildfires.
00;14;00;14 - 00;14;03;13
It seems inevitable
that weather conditions
00;14;03;16 - 00;14;07;11
will only become more volatile
and extreme in the future.
00;14;07;14 - 00;14;11;10
And I'd add to it that the need
for flexibility in our designs
00;14;11;13 - 00;14;14;15
we need to use smart
adaptive infrastructure
00;14;14;18 - 00;14;19;13
that is multi-purpose, such as reversible
lanes and digital signage.
00;14;19;16 - 00;14;22;21
It also needs to be reconfigurable
and scalable.
00;14;22;24 - 00;14;27;09
As populations continue to grow
and transport, user behavior shifts
00;14;27;12 - 00;14;28;21
into the future.
00;14;28;24 - 00;14;32;22
We also I just don't think we can ignore
the major part
00;14;32;25 - 00;14;35;24
that data must play in planning
and design.
00;14;35;28 - 00;14;40;08
Data is now a critical infrastructure
across all areas,
00;14;40;11 - 00;14;45;06
whether it's in planning and design
or operations or public engagement.
00;14;45;09 - 00;14;47;21
It seems like you're really getting ahead
00;14;47;21 - 00;14;51;02
with prevention and prediction
using real time data.
00;14;51;05 - 00;14;53;02
Darren, I have a question for you.
00;14;53;05 - 00;14;56;20
What does the world of prevention
and prediction look like to you?
00;14;56;23 - 00;15;00;22
How do emerging tools help detect
high risk areas before incidents
00;15;00;25 - 00;15;01;27
actually occur?
00;15;02;00 - 00;15;05;13
And what does that mean
for the future of transport?
00;15;05;16 - 00;15;05;28
I think
00;15;05;28 - 00;15;09;05
again, I mean, a common theme
that we've talked about is data,
00;15;09;08 - 00;15;13;14
the availability of better quality
data, more robust data
00;15;13;17 - 00;15;18;01
for at an entire network level,
at a very refined level of detail,
00;15;18;04 - 00;15;23;04
allows us to have a better understanding
of how the network is performing
00;15;23;07 - 00;15;26;12
and to identify
where we have potential risks.
00;15;26;15 - 00;15;31;11
In the past, the planning and the design
that we've done has been very reactive.
00;15;31;14 - 00;15;34;19
You know, we basically had to wait
until things happened in order to be able
00;15;34;22 - 00;15;38;18
to see that there was a problem
and then be able to resolve that problem.
00;15;38;21 - 00;15;43;06
But now we can use for example,
information from vehicles themselves
00;15;43;09 - 00;15;47;22
to understand when the telemetry
of a vehicle has had to change abruptly,
00;15;47;25 - 00;15;49;16
which might highlight that there's
00;15;49;16 - 00;15;52;22
a design feature in the network
that is causing a problem.
00;15;52;25 - 00;15;57;07
And GDE has a unique partnership
with a company called compass IoT
00;15;57;10 - 00;16;01;16
that is able to provide
that OEM data from vehicles,
00;16;01;19 - 00;16;02;15
so that we can
00;16;02;15 - 00;16;06;25
then analyze that information, highlight
potential risk areas in the network,
00;16;06;28 - 00;16;10;14
and then proactively outreach
to our clients to recommend
00;16;10;17 - 00;16;14;22
solutions at those places
where we actually see problems occurring.
00;16;14;25 - 00;16;19;10
It's so interesting knowing how powerful
the idea of using data in specifically
00;16;19;13 - 00;16;22;17
transport is needed,
and where it's going to take future
00;16;22;20 - 00;16;26;08
of community safety
and reliability of transportation.
00;16;26;11 - 00;16;28;06
This is a great conversation.
00;16;28;09 - 00;16;31;21
We did cover a lot about collaboration
and optimization,
00;16;31;24 - 00;16;34;24
so I love that
those were your words of the day.
00;16;34;27 - 00;16;37;27
Declan, do you have any closing remarks?
00;16;38;04 - 00;16;41;29
I think the and again,
with collaboration in mind,
00;16;42;02 - 00;16;46;04
I think the the bigger picture long term
future around things
00;16;46;07 - 00;16;49;07
like obviously AI,
it's just the tip of the iceberg.
00;16;49;13 - 00;16;54;22
But I think also introducing collaboration
between traditional ground
00;16;54;25 - 00;16;59;28
transportation, situational awareness,
it seems inevitable that we will converge
00;17;00;06 - 00;17;03;10
with advanced air mobility and,
00;17;03;13 - 00;17;07;06
situational awareness
for kind of low altitude vehicles.
00;17;07;09 - 00;17;09;28
That for me is a really,
really interesting and exciting
00;17;09;28 - 00;17;14;05
kind of area for, intelligent
transportation solutions moving forward.
00;17;14;08 - 00;17;19;01
I think then looking even further, longer
term ahead, the the question of quantum
00;17;19;04 - 00;17;23;14
computing, and obviously it's still
to be determined how viable it can be.
00;17;23;17 - 00;17;26;09
And we're probably talking
ten plus years into the future.
00;17;26;09 - 00;17;31;03
But quantum computing is ultimately going
to be the underpinning of,
00;17;31;07 - 00;17;34;07
of connected vehicles
into the long term future
00;17;34;11 - 00;17;38;02
and the need for advances
in quantum computing, but also
00;17;38;05 - 00;17;41;13
collaboration with the energy industry,
because with quantum
00;17;41;16 - 00;17;45;15
computing, energy consumption
is going to be a real challenge
00;17;45;18 - 00;17;49;02
and how you deliver energy
to the right parts of the network.
00;17;49;05 - 00;17;51;12
There's a lot of collaboration
that's going to be required
00;17;51;12 - 00;17;53;02
between the technology industry,
00;17;53;05 - 00;17;55;27
the energy industry
and obviously the transportation industry.
00;17;55;27 - 00;18;00;03
So lots of really,
really interesting spaces to explore.
00;18;00;06 - 00;18;04;18
But drawing it back to the near term,
there's still a lot of really,
00;18;04;21 - 00;18;08;15
really important optimization
of transportation networks
00;18;08;18 - 00;18;11;16
that can be achieved in the short term.
00;18;11;19 - 00;18;13;12
Darren, any closing remarks?
00;18;13;15 - 00;18;17;18
Continuing on that theme of optimization,
obviously, technologies,
00;18;17;21 - 00;18;22;09
as they've emerged over the last decade
or two decades, have really empowered us
00;18;22;12 - 00;18;27;19
to have a better understanding of, how
our systems are operating in real time.
00;18;27;22 - 00;18;32;15
So that one, when we're planning on when
we're designing, we can really dig into
00;18;32;18 - 00;18;34;26
what are the problems
that are occurring out there.
00;18;34;27 - 00;18;37;20
You get a better understanding
of the nature of the problems
00;18;37;20 - 00;18;40;16
that we're dealing with,
so that we can come up with more holistic,
00;18;40;16 - 00;18;43;29
more comprehensive solutions
to solving those problems.
00;18;44;02 - 00;18;46;22
You know, going to the days
when we need to just widen a freeway
00;18;46;22 - 00;18;49;20
for the sake of widening a freeway,
because we don't really understand
00;18;49;20 - 00;18;52;28
what's going on that's causing
the problems that we're seeing now.
00;18;53;01 - 00;18;54;05
We can be very targeted
00;18;54;05 - 00;18;58;09
and strategic in what we're doing
to improve our infrastructure,
00;18;58;12 - 00;19;03;10
because we are now able to collect data
that is more accurate in real time,
00;19;03;13 - 00;19;07;14
and then analyze that data in ways
that allow us to get a much, much better
00;19;07;17 - 00;19;10;26
understanding
of what's going on on the network
00;19;10;29 - 00;19;13;25
so that then
we can rightsize the solutions.
00;19;13;28 - 00;19;18;04
And then similarly, in operations,
we can optimize the performance
00;19;18;07 - 00;19;22;06
of those networks by again monitoring
how they're working in real time,
00;19;22;09 - 00;19;26;15
actively managing how they're working,
and then implementing solutions
00;19;26;18 - 00;19;30;03
that are able to achieve the outcomes
that we're looking for.
00;19;30;06 - 00;19;33;20
So I think, you know, ultimately
it's about taking a more holistic,
00;19;33;23 - 00;19;38;27
comprehensive approach to how we manage,
how we design and plan our transportation
00;19;39;00 - 00;19;42;08
infrastructure to optimize the performance
that we're getting,
00;19;42;11 - 00;19;45;08
to maximize the productivity
that we're getting so that we're really
00;19;45;11 - 00;19;48;17
getting the best out of the investments
that we're making.
00;19;48;20 - 00;19;49;28
It's great to hear that.
00;19;49;28 - 00;19;53;28
In our conversation today,
we really did explore how real time data,
00;19;54;01 - 00;19;54;26
inclusive design,
00;19;54;26 - 00;19;58;13
and emerging technologies are reshaping
the way we think about mobility.
00;19;58;16 - 00;20;01;22
And that's from integrating innovation
into legacy infrastructure
00;20;01;25 - 00;20;04;25
to detecting risk
before it actually becomes a reality.
00;20;05;02 - 00;20;08;21
And it's clear that the future
of transport depends on this form
00;20;08;24 - 00;20;12;08
of cross-industry collaboration,
both thinking
00;20;12;11 - 00;20;16;02
and having that idea of equity
at the up front of the design.
00;20;16;05 - 00;20;17;12
So we as we look ahead,
00;20;17;12 - 00;20;20;10
I think the challenge isn't
about deploying smarter systems.
00;20;20;13 - 00;20;24;04
To Darren and Declan, what you both have
shared today, it's really about designing
00;20;24;07 - 00;20;28;26
those transport networks that serve
everyone across every generation.
00;20;28;29 - 00;20;30;09
Thanks for joining us today.
00;20;30;11 - 00;20;32;05
Thank you, Declan, for being here.
00;20;32;08 - 00;20;34;10
Thanks, Debbie. It's been a pleasure.
Thank you for having me.
00;20;34;13 - 00;20;36;27
And thank you, Darren,
for joining us today.
00;20;37;00 - 00;20;38;19
Thanks for having me.
It's been a real pleasure.
00;20;38;19 - 00;20;45;03
It's been a very enjoyable conversation.
