The data centre boom is running into growing community resistance, a problem that money and technology alone cannot solve. Across the United States, at least 75 projects worth roughly USD 130 billion were delayed or blocked in the first three months of 2026 amid local opposition. Microsoft abandoned a proposed Wisconsin site after community resistance and has since introduced a community-first approach with greater transparency and earlier local engagement.
Meeting global demand for data centres could require USD 6.7 trillion in investment by 2030 as AI and other digital workloads drive rapid expansion. Governments are encouraging that investment, while communities ask what it will mean for local power, water, infrastructure, public finances and quality of life. Developers that address these impacts, build trust and give communities a meaningful voice will be better positioned to reduce delays and create lasting local value.
